About Afghan Feminised

Cured properly and opened cold, Afghan leads with myrcene: a heavy damp-earth note with something sweet and overripe sitting behind it. Underneath it caryophyllene adds a dry peppery floor, and it reads mid-palate rather than on the first pass. This 70/30 indica tests at 18% THC, but potency is the least interesting number here: what separates Afghan from the others on the same shelf is how the aroma behaves across a cure, and that is a question of storage and patience rather than genetics alone.

Growing it for the nose rather than the scales

Chasing terpene expression in Afghan pulls against chasing yield, and it is worth knowing which one you are doing before you start. The Myrcene/Caryophyllene/Linalool profile does its best work in living soil, where the microbial side produces secondary compounds a bottle cannot. That is easier here than it sounds: decent peat-free compost and worm castings are a garden centre purchase in most British towns.

Through the 6-8 weeks of bloom, stop foliar spraying after week two — anything landing on developing trichomes is still there at harvest and you will taste it. The final three weeks decide which terpenes dominate the cured flower: nights held at 16-18°C push myrcene forward, while a warmer finish protects the lighter linalool notes at the top.

The cure is where most of the flavour is lost in this country, and the reason is the weather. A 10-14 day hang wants 15-18°C at 55-60% relative humidity, which a British autumn will not give you in a spare room — a temperature-controlled cupboard or a wine fridge set to 16°C solves it for the price of one wasted harvest. Then into glass, burped twice a day for the first fortnight. The caryophyllene layer that makes this one worth growing does not appear until somewhere between weeks three and four in the jar.

Flowering: 6-8 weeks. Indoor yield: 450-650 g/m2. Outdoor yield: 450-500 g/plant. Plant height: 120 cm. Rated intermediate difficulty.

Flavour, aroma and effect

Afghan arrives in stages. The first draw at 18% THC brings a musky earthiness that coats rather than cuts. The focused, energetic, calm character follows within minutes, starting as weight behind the eyes and working down through the shoulders and chest. By about a quarter of an hour it has become a physical stillness — not sedation so much as a strong disinclination to get up. Two to three hours at a moderate dose. The caryophyllene underneath adds a warmth that keeps the whole thing anchored.

Terpene breakdown

Primary: Myrcene · Secondary: Caryophyllene · Tertiary: Linalool. How this profile survives the journey from flower to vapour depends on temperature. Low vaporisation, 180-188°C, keeps the caryophyllene and linalool audible over the myrcene base. Run it hotter, or burn it, and the three collapse into one note — pleasant enough, but none of the complexity that made it worth choosing.

Who it suits

Who does well with Afghan? Indoor growers who want the timeline under their own control. Outdoor growers who want to choose when flowering starts. Anyone with the room and the patience to veg it properly before flipping. Difficulty is rated intermediate, which means a moderate learning curve that rewards attention without demanding a laboratory.
